DPA Microphones

Why engineers choose DPA

DPA was founded in 1992 in Kokkedal, Denmark, by Morten Støve and Ole Brøsted Sørensen, two engineers who left Brüel & Kjær when it closed its pro audio division. That heritage is the whole point: Brüel & Kjær built measurement microphones, instruments designed to tell you exactly what the sound was rather than flatter it, and DPA carried that discipline into microphones for performance.

The 4006 omnidirectional made the company's name in studios. The breakthrough for theatre came in 1995, when DPA worked with Danish hearing aid specialist Muphone to shrink a capsule without losing the sound, producing the 4060 and 4061 miniatures that became the standard on musical theatre rigs worldwide. The CORE series followed in 2017, reworking the amplifier stage to handle the demands of digital wireless transmitters.

Microphones are still hand-assembled in Denmark, with each one taking up to 200 individual steps and around 15 calibrations before it ships. That is why two DPA capsules from the same box sound the same, which matters when a show has thirty of them on radio mics and the sound designer needs them interchangeable.

Counterfeit miniature capsules are a genuine problem in this category, and a fake 4061 is difficult to spot until it fails mid-show. As official distributor we supply product directly from DPA with full manufacturer warranty, and we hold regional stock on the items productions run through fastest.
