EXBOX.MD is a compact bidirectional format converter that bridges Dante audio networking with MADI (AES10). It’s built for engineers who need a quick, reliable bridge between the two worlds, whether in touring live sound, OB vans or studio setups where a Dante rig has to talk to MADI-based consoles or recorders, or vice versa. The unit ships in DirectOut’s small EXBOX enclosure, a third of a 19-inch rack width, so several can sit side by side in a single rack space.

Conversion and Connectivity

EXBOX.MD converts up to 64 audio channels each direction between MADI and Dante, carried across 32 streams. Three MADI port types are fitted, coaxial BNC, optical SC multi-mode, and an empty SFP cage that accepts any compatible transceiver, so the box adapts to whatever MADI interface the rest of the signal chain uses. Four RJ45 network ports (one PoE-capable) run through a built-in switch, supporting Dante's primary/secondary redundancy mode or daisy-chaining additional Dante devices.

Sync and Redundancy

FastSRC, DirectOut's low-latency sample rate converter, keeps the Dante and MADI sides in sync even when the two sources aren't running on a common clock, at under 0.15 ms added latency. EARS (Enhanced Automatic Redundancy Switching) monitors the audio network and MADI inputs and switches automatically to a defined backup source if the primary signal drops out, using either DirectOut's BLDS trace tone or pilot-tone triggering.

Control and Power

The unit is managed through Audinate's Dante Controller, DirectOut's globcon software, or a browser-based UI, and is Dante Domain Manager ready. Power comes from up to two external supplies or Power over Ethernet, giving the option of full power redundancy on tour or in a fixed install. An optional BOXMOUNT.XL kit racks up to three EXBOX units side by side in 1RU.
